According to a job posted on the Daimler website, Mercedes-Benz parent company, they are currently seeking a software engineer to install the highly anticipated new in-car infotainment system within their vehicles, and its called “Projected Mode”.
We first got wind that Google were collaborating with Audi on an infotainment system to rival Apple’s “iOS in the Car” technology at the CES in January this year, integrating Android based smartphones within the cars dashboard flawlessly. Judging by the latest job posting, Mercedes plan to mirror your smartphone’s display on a larger unit which comes integrated into new models.
Translating the German job posting, parts of it read as below:
“Smartphone functions such as play, for example, media content, send messages / receive phone calls, navigation, etc. can be controlled and displayed on a safe for the driver way through the vehicle’s controls.”
“Google-projected mode, you develop one of the most significant technological innovation in the field of telematics, which should be used in all Mercedes-Benz vehicles and in all markets worldwide.”
Technology like telematics, and other “in the car” software, would benefit well with a boost by an established mobile technology operating system. Pretty much everybody owns a smartphone nowadays, and are already reliant on the hundreds and thousands of apps currently available on the market.
Interestingly, there is a SECOND job posting requiring a software engineer to install the Apple infotainment system too, which confirms suspicions that Mercedes-Benz had been bouncing between the two rivals for a while. Meaning whichever smartphone you may own, you should be able to hook it up to your Mercedes-Benz in the future, and thats pretty cool, isn’t it?
